People in the Lead

Understanding and Engaging 'A Better Start' Community and Workforce

Along with our ‘A Better Start’ partners in Bradford, Lambeth, Southend-on Sea and Blackpool, Small Steps Big Changes is currently working with NatCen Social Research as part of the People in the Lead Project.

Working alongside workforce colleagues in antenatal & early child development teams, and local communities is crucial to successful delivery of the ‘A Better Start’ (ABS) vision.  The People in the Lead project will focus on these key partnerships to gain a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of working together for the benefit of parents to be, families and children.

The NatCen team will carry out surveys with workforce and in communities to:

  • Provide each ABS site with a detailed understanding of the capacity, capability and motivations of local professionals and the community.
  • Identify how professionals and community members can be engaged to deliver the ABS’ vision.
  • Identify the barriers and enablers specific to each site and ensure that recommendations reflect the individual contexts of each area.

NatCen will be conducting in-home face to face surveys with our communities in the council wards of Arboretum Aspley, Bulwell and St Ann’s during October and November 2017. This stage will be followed by an online survey for paid workforce.

The findings of the study will be shared in the new year and will provide SSBC with insights on the workforce and community's readiness to engage with the ‘A Better Start’ programme.  This, in turn, will help us develop action plans and strategies to improve engagement with, and involve these groups in our work.
